Claremont McKenna College’s new 135,000 SF Robert Day Sciences Center has broken ground! Each level of the building is oriented towards a different direction of the campus, providing a 360-degree connection between the Center and the college-at-large – allowing life to seamlessly flow between the inside and outside while encouraging inter-disciplinary collaboration.
“More than ever, we are seeing the confluence of previously distinct disciplines: breakthroughs in computer and data science lead to breakthroughs in the natural and life sciences. As a consequence, we need to provide spaces for the integration of these previously siloed sciences. The architecture for the new Robert Day Sciences Center’s seeks to maximize this integration and interaction. The labs and classrooms are stacked in a Jenga-like composition framing a column-free, open internal space with the freedom and flexibility to adapt the ever-evolving demands of technology and science. It is our hope that the building will not only provoke new conversations between scientists but that it may also stimulate the rest of the liberal arts students to take a deeper interest in the sciences and vice versa. The analytical embracing the experimental – rationality intersecting with creativity,” says Bjarke Ingels, Founder, BIG.

ABOUT
BIG-BJARKE INGELS GROUP
BIG is a Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona and Shenzhen based group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. The office is currently involved in a large number of projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and changes. Not least due to the influence from multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies, that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. We believe that in order to deal with today’s challenges, architecture can profitably move into a field that has been largely unexplored. A pragmatic utopian architecture that steers clear of the petrifying pragmatism of boring boxes and the naïve utopian ideas of digital formalism. Like a form of programmatic alchemy, we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients such as living, leisure, working, parking and shopping. By hitting the fertile overlap between pragmatic and utopia, we architects once again find the freedom to change the surface of our planet, to better fit contemporary life forms.

PARTNER – AGUSTIN PEREZ-TORRES
Agustin Perez-Torres first worked at BIG in Copenhagen from 2006 to 2008, during which he collaborated with Bjarke on a number of international projects, including the 8 House. He returned to BIG in 2011 as a Project Leader in the New York office where he led the team on the development of the Vancouver House as well as the Cité de la Musique à Genève Competition. Agustin became a Partner in 2018 and is currently leading various design competitions, serving as the Partner-in-Charge for the Redskins Stadium in D.C and the F.C Barcelona Camp Nou stadium competition. Prior to his design work, Agustin has worked as an architectural journalist and has assisted with major architectural exhibitions. Before joining BIG, Agustin worked for OMA in Rotterdam and Carme Pinos Studio in Barcelona.
PARTNER – MARTIN VOELKLE
Martin Voelkle joined BIG’s Copenhagen office in 2010 as a Project Designer for the recently completed Shenzhen Energy HQ. Martin moved to New York City in 2012 and became a key member of the project team for the 60,000 m2 mixed-use development Vancouver House in Canada. He was named Partner in 2018 and is currently leading various high profile projects, including 2 World Trade Center in New York City, the Smithsonian Institution Masterplan in Washington D.C. Prior to joining BIG, Martin worked as a Senior Architect at the Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) in Stuttgart, Germany. He led the design of a sports complex in the UAE and was Project Manager for two large-scale projects in Mexico. Martin also worked at Studio Scholz, a design firm in Stuttgart, Germany, and completed various interior design projects independently. Before studying architecture, he was originally trained as a carpenter.
PARTNER – JOÃO ALBUQUERQUE
Named as a BIG Barcelona Partner in 2021, João Albuquerque began his BIGster journey in BIG Copenhagen in 2008, eventually moving to Barcelona in 2019 to support the establishment of a strong foundation for BIG Barcelona. In 2015, he was named Associate, and in 2019, became the Design Director of the BIG Barcelona office, leading projects throughout Spain – including the Skyline Office Towers in Madrid, and the recent competition for the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao. João works effectively in BIG’s creative environment, regularly leading design teams on projects from competitions through Schematic Design and Design Development phases. João brings an incisive approach to exploring the intersection between computational technologies and architecture — programming and parametrics — and applies this research on many scales, from design conceptualization to fabrication and construction. He also has experience working in various typologies such as masterplans, including Europa City in Paris and the winning proposals for cultural neighborhoods in both Qiddya and South Korea; high-rise tower designs, including the completed Shenzhen Energy Mansion in China; cultural designs, including the Adelaide Contemporary Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao; and research-based projects, such as the new building vernacular for future life on Mars. João completed his Master of Architecture at the University of Sciences and Technology of Coimbra, in Portugal and achieved a post-graduate MAA degree from IAAC in Barcelona, having his thesis project being exhibited at the 2011 Beijing Biennale and the Museu del Disseny of Barcelona.
PARTNER – LORENZO BODDI
After first joining BIG in 2012 as an intern, Lorenzo Boddi was named as an Associate in 2017, and as a BIG London Partner in 2021. He has provided key contributions to several winning competitions, including the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark; MÉCA arts cultural center in Bordeaux, France; OMNITURM, a 186-meter mixed-use tower in Frankfurt completed in 2020; and an 80,000 meter-squared mixed-use tower in Berlin, Germany that is currently in construction. As Project Manager, Lorenzo has worked on several residential projects in Scandinavia, a mixed-use development in Sydney, Australia, as well as the OMNITURM tower in the financial district of Frankfurt. Lorenzo joined BIG’s London office in 2016 to work on Google’s King’s Cross Headquarters. He is currently leading the design of CityLife Milan, a new 85,000 meter-squared development in Milan, Italy. Lorenzo received his Master of Architecture from the University of Florence, Italy, where he complemented his studies, with teaching positions in Architectural Design.
PARTNER – ANDY YOUNG
Andy Young joined BIG in 2016 as Technical Director of the London office, and was named a BIG London Partner in 2021. He has over 25 years of experience working in the design and construction of large-scale projects in the UK and the Middle East. In addition to this, Andy provides technical assistance to the Copenhagen and New York offices. Since 2016, Andy has led some of BIG’s most prominent projects, including East Side Tower, an 80,000 meter-squared mixed-use tower in Berlin. Andy has also led the technical design of projects such as Google’s King’s Cross headquarters, and CityLife Milan, in addition to working on several large-scale projects in the Middle East. Prior to joining BIG, Andy was an Associate Partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners. He was the Architect-in-charge of The Leadenhall Building, a landmark commercial tower in the City of London financial district, seeing the project from planning to completion in 2014. Andy is a UK Registered Architect and a Member of the RIBA. He received his Diploma in Architecture from The University of Westminster in 1993 whilst working at Michael Hopkins & Partners.
